Powders are often the most difficult products to screen reliably. Fine particles, cohesion, moisture and electrostatic effects can strongly influence flow behavior. A standard solution therefore does not always perform well.
Why powders need special attention
With powders, the balance between capacity and accuracy is often critical. The finer the separation, the higher the risk of blinding or reduced throughput.
Powders can also be sensitive to product loss, dust formation or degradation. The machine must therefore not only separate, but also handle the product gently enough and keep the environment safe.
Important selection criteria
Pay attention to the required cut point, required capacity and the tendency of the powder to agglomerate. Desired cleaning time and the frequency of product changeovers also play a major role.
For very fine or difficult-flowing powders, a circular vibrating sieve with the right mesh and support can be a good basis. In other cases, a tumbler solution or ultrasonic system may be more logical.
- Choose the screen mesh based on the real separation goal, not only on nominal particle size.
- Check whether the product tends to blind the mesh.
- Include dust control and hygienic design in the selection.
When ultrasonic or tumbler screening becomes relevant
Ultrasonic support is especially useful for very fine powders where mesh blinding limits performance. The system helps keep the mesh active and often improves separation consistency.
A tumbler screener can be useful when a gentler, more controlled movement is required, for example with sensitive or very fine products where product quality is more important than aggressive throughput.
Practical recommendation
Always collect information about particle size distribution, bulk density, moisture content and desired final quality. With that data, it becomes much easier to determine which screening technology fits best.
For powders, product testing is usually not a luxury, but the fastest route to a reliable solution.
